Robert T. Matsui becomes the first Sansei to be elected to Congressi representing the Sacramento Area.

Robert T. Matsui is elected to Congress taking over the seat held by retiring John E. Moss (known for passage of the "Freedom of Information" Act). Matsui, along with fellow Congressman Norman Mineta, had spent three and half years in a concentration camp. Senators Inouye and Matsunaga, both highly decorated veterans with the famed 100th/442nd Regimental Combat Team, together with Matsui and Mineta, brought a certain moral voice and authority to the redress movement.
